Suillus ponderosus  — Heavy Bolete — Suillaceae


Medium to large (sometimes very large) mushroom. Convex cap maturing to planar or slightly depressed, reddish-brown to dull yellow, viscid to slimy. Pores yellow when young, discoloring but not turning blue when bruised, large, tubes similar in color. Stalk thick, equal, or tapered at either end, sometimes nearly pointed at base, yellow above ring, occasionally netlike, fibrils and mottled below, staining brownish. Veil viscid, yellow to orange. Mycorrhizal.
 
Habitat:
Scattered to gregarious, terrestrial, conifers, often Douglas-fir.

Scent: Pungent

Spores: Brown to dull-cinnamon

Season: Autumn
