Pholiota mutabilis  — Changeable Pholiota — Strophariaceae


Small to medium mushroom. Obtuse cap maturing to convex, nearly planar or umbonate, smooth, slightly viscid when wet, hygrophanous, rusty to reddish-brown, fading to pale yellowish, often lighter in center. Gills attached or slightly decurrent, pallid aging to brown or pale cinnamon. Tall stalk, equal, or tapered to base, small scales when fresh, smooth above ring, brownish below. Whitish veil forming ring on stalk or disappearing. Saprophytic.
 
Habitat:
Clusters on logs, stumps, sometimes buried wood, coniferous forest.

Scent: Not distinctive

Spores: Cinnamon-brown

Season: Autumn
