Hypholoma capnoides — Conifer Tuft — Strophariaceae


Small to medium mushroom. Convex cap maturing to plane or umbonate, often viscid, smooth, yellowish to rusty-brown, margin colored lighter and with veil remnants. Gills attached, sometimes separating, pallid, aging smoky gray. Stalk taller than cap diameter, slender, equal or tapering at base, pallid to yellowish above, darker below. Veil thin, sometimes leaving patches or a zone on stalk. Saprophytic.

Synonym: Naematoloma capnoides
 
Habitat:
Typically clusters, on rotting conifers, particularly Douglas-fir.

Scent: Not distinctive

Spores: Purple-brown to purple-gray

Season: Autumn
