Gymnopilus sapineus  — Fir Flamecap — Strophariaceae


Small to medium mushroom. Convex or nearly flat cap, dry, bald or finely hairy, sometimes with tiny scales, yellowish to reddish brown, with veil remnants, lined when mature. Gills attached, close, yellow to whitish, brown spots and then rusty brown with age. Stalk thin, equal, similar to cap color, but paler, darkening with age. Partial veil when young. Saprophytic.

Habitat: Solitary or gregarious, small clusters, on decaying wood, conifers.

Scent: Bitter, sometimes mild

Spores: Rusty-brown to orange-brown

Season: Summer to Autumn
