Stereum hirsutum  — Hairy Curtain Crust — Stereaceae


Small to medium crust fungus. Shelflike or flat, flexible when moist, margin free. Small cap can be fused to form wide, lobed surface, planar or sometimes wavy, with concentric zones often present. Cap reddish-to-dark brown, covered with whitish to darker matted hairs when fresh, margin paler. Underside smooth to bumpy, sometimes exuding reddish to yellow liquid, color orange to buff or lighter with age. Stalk absent or a narrow lateral base. Saprophytic.

Habitat: Groups, fused, or overlapping, on decaying wood, branches, sometimes living trees.

Scent: Mild

Spores: White

Season: Autumn
