Russula fragilis  — Fragile Brittlegill — Russulaceae


Small mushroom. Convex cap, becoming plane or slightly depressed in center with age, margin grooved, variable colors including whitish to blackish, often purplish, darker at center, viscid when moist, skin separating to 3/4 distance to center. Gills narrow, white, edges sometimes cottony, finely toothed. Stalk equal or broadened at base or apex, white, fragile. Mycorrhizal.

Habitat: Solitary, scattered, or groups, decayed wood or duff, often moss, hardwoods and conifers.

Scent: Slightly fruity

Spores: White

Season: Autumn
