Russula elaeoides  — Crab Brittlegill — Russulaceae


Medium to large mushroom. Convex cap, with center depression, aging to broadly funnel-shaped, viscid when wet, velvety when dry, dark brown with blackish center, peeling margin to ½ distance, buff margin darkening when bruised. Gills crowded, broad, creamy yellow, staining brown. Stalk whitish to buff, pink-tinged, stained when handled. Mycorrhizal.

Synonym: Russula  xerampelina var. elaeodea, R. clavipes
 
Habitat: Solitary to groups, terrestrial, coniferous forest, often Douglas-fir.

Scent: Not distinctive, fishy when old

Spores: Pale yellow

Season: Autumn
