Russula americana — American Russula — Russulaceae


Small to large mushroom. Convex cap, becoming broadly convex to flat, sometimes shallowly depressed, viscid when moist, bright red, fading to pink, margin smooth.  Gills attached or somewhat decurrent, white maturing to cream or yellow. Stalk equal or with tapered, red, or pink-tinged. Mycorrhizal.

Synonym: Russula sanguinea

Habitat: Solitary, scattered or groups, conifers.

Scent: Not distinctive, sometimes fruity

Spores: Dark cream

Season: Autumn
