Cortinarius caperatus — Gypsy Mushroom — Cortinariaceae


Large mushroom. Broadly conical cap, becoming convex; surface dry, irregularly wrinkled from center to margin, pale orange to light orange-brown, paler at the margin. Stalk heavy, equal, pale tan, usually striate above the veil. Veil ample, membranous (unlike the webby cortina of the other cortinarius species), forming ring. Notched gills, attached to stalk, cream becoming brown. Mycorrhizal.

Rozites caperata
 
Habitat: Scattered to small groups, in debris-rich soil under conifers. Can be abundant.

Scent: Not distinctive

Spores: Rusty-brown

Season: Autumn
