Craterellus tubaeformis  —  Winter Chanterelle — Cantharellaceae


Small mushroom. Brown cap, convex becoming vase-shaped with a perforated center and wavy margin, sticky when fresh.  Dark yellowish-brown to blackish-brown, fading paler. Undersurface extends down stem, maturing to false gills, forked, yellowish to grayish, sometimes lilac. Stalk not tapering, waxy, orangish when young, becoming paler. Mycorrhizal.

Habitat: Solitary or small clusters, on moss or decayed coniferous logs in wet conditions

Scent: Not distinctive or slightly fragrant

Spores: White

Season: Autumn to winter
