Leccinum scabrum — Brown Birch-Bolete — Boletaceae


Small to medium mushroom. Convex to plane or slightly depressed, cap surface smooth to slightly viscid when wet, yellow-brown to tan, darker with age. Pale pores, darkening with age, not bruising. Stalk taller than cap diameter, thicker at base, solid, whitish to gray with hairs that blacken. Mycorrhizal.
 
Habitat: Solitary or small groups, growing beneath planted birch in Pacific Northwest.

Scent: Not distinctive

Spores: Brown

Season: Autumn
