Boletus edulis — King Bolete — Boletaceae


Medium to very large mushroom. Convex and sticky when young, cap maturing to flattened form. Cap color variable from pale to dark red. Large yellow pores darkening with age, initially whitish, turning brown, not turning blue when bruised. Thick stalk whitish to brown, swollen at base when young, netlike pattern on upper portion; often taller than cap.  Mycorrhizal.

 
Habitat: Solitary or small groups. Coniferous forest.

Scent: Pleasant

Spores: Olive-brown

Season: Summer to autumn
